Will horror be the revival of the X-men Universe? We all know MCU is introducing its first horror flick with the Doctor Strange sequel. The X-Men Universe had this planned out much ahead, but the project got pushed back considerably. The movie The New Mutants, slated for 2019 release, will now be releasing sometime in 2020.
In terms of success, MCU is already an established franchise. Although X–Men was the first to grace our screens, it has yet to find success at the same level as the MCU. There are rumors that The New Mutants might do the trick. But, after the alleged acquisition of Fox by Disney, does it matter?
How Can X-Men Establish On The Scale With MCU?
The question is: What will The New Mutants mean for the X-Men Universe and the franchise itself? For over two decades now, we saw Wolverine, Charles Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Storm. And some “time-traveling and saving the future” event later, some new faces like Havoc, Quicksilver, etc.
Even after adding powerful and talented actors to the franchise, it toppled at the box office. Die-hard fans appreciate anything thrown at them, but they had enough to repeat almost the same storyline. We understand the attempt to introduce the mutants in mainstream film, but if you build a successful empire as MCU has, you need much more than just talented actors.
Not that we are saying MCU lacks talented actors, what we mean is they have a worked-out vision. Most of us probably grew up watching Spider-Man and the X-Men animated series. For that reason, maybe we expect something dynamic. But, look at how MCU subtly places Easter Eggs and future movie references in some of the movies. After the success of Iron Man, only fate could stop MCU from surging.
Who Are The New Mutants?
One move is all it takes. Despite fans’ appreciation for original X-Men Franchises, the newer ones looked promising and had more capacity to play with the storyline. As an unbiased superhero fan, we are going to say we loved what got thrown at us. Again, success is what matters and the continuation. If you saw the trailer for the upcoming mutant movie, it gives the thrills.
Trailers don’t determine all as the end product matters. Nonetheless, let’s discuss what we extrapolated from the trailer. We see a group of five teenagers in an eerie medical facility, where the people involved are trying to suppress the mutants from adapting to their powers. The Mutants fight and try to escape and save their lives. However, there is more than what meets the eye.
A whole new range of mutants will get introduced. Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin, the sister of Colossus, Charlie Heaton as SamGuthrie/Cannonball, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/ Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/ Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/ Mirage will be appearing in their respective roles.
The New Mutants | Part of Main Storyline or Just A Throwaway?
The movie underwent reshoots, and after the acquisition of Fox and its properties, Disney labeled it for a 2020 release. Even though the former never took place, the trailer is chilling and certainly gives off the horror vibe. As comic book movie fans, we are hyping up. The movie will release under Marvel’s label alongside 20th Century Fox.
Marvel has plans for the introduction of mutants in the future. Kevin Feige, CEO of Marvel Entertainment, gave a little teaser about the future phases of MCU and disclosed that he is planning to slowly integrate the mutants in the later stages as the current MCU storyline progresses. It means that the entire X-Men Universe is getting recast.
Except for Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool, the entire universe will get overwritten. So, is The New Mutants just a throwaway movie. After acquiring X-Men from Fox and much delay, is Marvel just planning to experiment with this movie? Regardless of the success and failure of the film, Marvel will include a frame of stories that will establish mutants into prominence alongside the current Heroes of the Earth.
The New Mutants | Setting Up X-Men in MCU
Nonetheless, The New Mutants cast oozes talent, and granted that the story isn’t clear just yet, it might turn out for the best. Maybe, this movie will be in continuation after the central X-Men universe establishes itself in the MCU. It will be sometime before that happens. But, we can be hopeful that fans like us will get feast upon the alluring world of mutants.
Furthermore, let us reclarify our statements. X-Men movies aren’t all that bad. The actors who played their respective parts were born to do it. The story could use some boost, but it’s all in the past now. After the seemingly mixed reception of the latest film in the franchise, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, we keep our fingers crossed for The New Mutants. Its success will mean a great deal for fans and the studios alike.
In sum, The New Mutants was subject to some scrutiny at the studios before its initial release. As it received a green light for release, we hope the story is gripping, enjoyable, and an absolute horror that we all expect. It’s in fates’ hand that is in store for us on April 13, 2020.
