What was the Pamela Smart murder case?

In 1990, the town of Derry, New Hampshire, was rocked by the murder of 24-year-old Gregory Smart, who was shot and killed in his home. The crime was orchestrated by his wife, Pamela Smart, a high school media coordinator who was having an affair with a 15-year-old student, William Flynn.

Smart convinced Flynn to carry out the killing. In addition to Flynn, four other individuals were involved in the plot, including Patrick Randall, who held a knife to Smart’s throat while Flynn shot him.

Though the other four individuals served shorter sentences and were eventually released from prison, Smart was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life without parole.

The case gained national attention, as it was one of the first high-profile cases involving a sexual relationship between a teacher and a student. It also inspired the book and film “To Die For,” which starred Nicole Kidman.

Despite her numerous appeals, Smart remains in prison while the others involved in the plot have been released.

Other individuals involved in the case have already been released from prison

After serving less time behind bars, three further suspects in the Pamela Smart murder case were freed. Gregory Smart’s killer, William Flynn, was released in 2015 after serving 25 years in jail.

In the early 2000s, Vance Lattime Jr. and Raymond Fowler, who assisted in the murder’s planning and served as lookouts, were both let go. Flynn, who was 15 years old when the murder occurred, was first given a life sentence without the possibility of release.

Yet his sentence was lowered in 2015 after a change in state legislation that eliminated obligatory life sentences for juveniles. Fowler and Latimer Jr. were each given prison terms ranging from 18 to 36 years.

After completing 15 years in prison, Lattime Jr. was released in 2005, while Fowler was freed in 2003 after serving 11 years. Due to the case’s stunning combination of sex, murder, and betrayal, it garnered widespread notice at the time.

Despite multiple appeals, Pamela Smart continues to serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole in jail.
