Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, the individuals responsible for the brutal murder of Lee Rigby, received life sentences for their crimes.

Adebowale, a murderer, was given a minimum term of 45 years, while Adebolajo, the older of the two, was sentenced to a whole life order without the possibility of release.

Both offenders sought to reduce their sentences, but the courts rejected their appeals.

In June 2018, Adebolajo regretted his actions, stating that he had “misinterpreted” the Quran and had been manipulated through brainwashing.

Further, on June 3, 2018, Michael Adebolajo, the murderer of Lee Rigby, expressed regret for his heinous act and offered an apology for the first time.

Adebolajo admitted that he had “misinterpreted” the Quran to justify his actions and acknowledged that he had been subject to brainwashing.

In response to Adebolajo’s apology, Lee Rigby’s mother, Lyn Rigby, firmly stated that she did not accept his apology and declared that she would “never” forgive him for what he did.

Rigby’s mother, understandably devastated by the loss of her son, made it clear that she would never forgive Adebolajo.

In 2022, reports emerged that Adebolajo had been prohibited from participating in yoga classes in prison due to concerns that he might propagate extremist views among fellow inmates.

Who Were Lee Rigby Murderers Michael Adebolajo And Michael Adebowale?

Michael Adebolajo, born on December 10, 1984, in Lambeth, London, was a British citizen of Nigerian descent.

He underwent a process of radicalization and embraced extremist beliefs. Adebolajo had engaged in various activities associated with radical Islamism, including an attempt to travel to Somalia to join an extremist group.

On the other hand, Michael Adebowale, born on May 11, 1991, in Lewisham, London, was also a British citizen.

He converted to Islam during his late teens and became radicalized. Adebowale had a history of mental health problems and was known to associate with individuals involved in extremist activities.

Adebowale’s mother was a probation officer, and his Father served at the Nigerian High Commission. Adebowale converted to Islam in 2009, adopting the name Ismael.

In 2009, he was convicted of drug dealing offenses and sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.

On May 22, 2013, Adebolajo and Adebowale deliberately attacked Lee Rigby in Woolwich, London. In broad daylight, they deliberately ran him over with a car and brutally assaulted him with knives, horrifying witnesses nearby.

Both attackers were apprehended by the Police at the scene and subsequently arrested, charged, and brought to trial for the murder.

Not to mention, the attack drew condemnation from political and religious leaders across various sectors of society, reflecting a unified response against the act of violence.

People from diverse backgrounds united in grief, expressing their profound sadness and demonstrating unwavering solidarity.

Queen Elizabeth II expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, while the then-prime minister, David Cameron, strongly denounced the attack.
