Lhermitte is a Belgian woman who murdered her five children. After sixteen years of the killings, she has been euthanized at her own request.

Geneviève killed her four daughters and a son, aged three to 14, on 28 February 2007 while their Father was away. The family lived in the town of Nivelles.

Concerned authorities in Belgium and the country’s law allows criminal and people to choose to be euthanized if they go through unbearable psychological suffering that cannot be healed. 

However, the person should be fully aware of his decision. He must be able to convey their dying wish in a reasonable manner.

Is Geneviève Lhermitte Still In Prison?

Belgium woman Geneviève Lhermitte faced sixteen years in prison after a jury found her guilty of her children’s murder. The 56-year-old mother was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008.

However, Lhermitte’s psychological condition and mental health moved her to a psychiatric hospital in 2019. 

She appealed for euthanized request, and as per Belgium’s law, people are allowed to choose to be euthanized if they suffer from unbearable psychological pain. 

But, the person should fully know their decision and express their wish reasonably. 

According to Lhermitte’s lawyer, she was not mentally stable, and she tried to end her life after she killed her kids. The lawyer said:

This is a unique procedure that my client Mrs. Lhermitte followed because she has various medical opinions. Her medical reports have been collected to be presented in court.

In addition, during a television interview, Lhermitte’s psychologist Emilie Maroit said that her patient likely chose to die on the same day she killed her children. Maroit explained, saying:

She (referring to her patient Lhermitte) tried to kill herself on 28 February in a symbolic gesture of respect for her kids.

Perhaps, it could have been her wish to finish what she started, because primarily she wished to end her life when she killed them. 

During Lhermitte’s trial, her lawyers suggested that their client was mentally sick and should not be sent to prison. 

However, the jury found her guilty of her kids’ murder and sentenced her to life imprisonment. 

Moreover, Geneviève filed a civil lawsuit in 2010 and demanded 3 million ( that is £2.6 million) from a former psychiatrist.

She claimed that his inaction failed to prevent her from murdering her kids. After ten years, she abandoned the legal battle.

What Did Geneviève Lhermitte Do?

A Belgium woman known as her children’s murderer now appealed for euthanized request, following a jury gave the verdict of her life imprisonment.

Geneviève Lhermitte committed a disturbing crime as she killed her young kids, aged three to 14, on 28 February 2007.

Her kids included a son and four daughters, and they lived in the town of Nivelles.

According to the investigation, Lhermitte tried to take her own life but failed and called emergency services for help.

The 2007’s quintuple innocent murders shook Belgium, and the news of her sins spread worldwide. 

According to the 2022 report, approximately 2,966 people in Belgium chose to die via euthanasia. The numbers are an increment of 10% compared to the last year.

Generally, people showed Cancer as the typical reason, but officials reported that nearly three out of four patient requests several sorts of pain involving physical and psychological suffering.

The country has included children to be helped to die too, since 2014. Other nations don’t adopt this policy and mostly allow adults to have final consent if they are deadly ill and in great pain.
