According to the station, Judge Kenneth Ballard stated during the sentence that he only gave mercy because it was required by state law.

“In cold blood, you slaughtered your whole family, Mr. Smith,” Ballard said. “You created this plot to murder your family days and weeks in advance to spend time with your lover.

You murdered your mother and stepfather while they were sleeping by shooting them in the head. Then you shot your two brothers in the head to execute them. The youngest was hiding beneath his cot.”

“Your conduct can only be regarded as pure wickedness,” Ballard continued. “You appear to have no sorrow for your conduct.”

Daniel Long’s Father spoke about his anguish following the loss of his family members at Tuesday’s sentence.

“I never imagined my life to be chaotic,” Doug Long remarked. “Nobody knows what life will bring, and the circumstances surrounding this heinous murder were unthinkable.

Nothing could have prepared me for the anguish and pain this act would cause my family and me.”
