He met his untimely demise while being a passenger on a Piper Malibu light aircraft en route from Nantes to Cardiff.
The crash site remained elusive despite an extensive three-day search covering approximately 4,400 square kilometers (1,700 sq mi) across the English Channel.
However, subsequent private searches yielded results, leading to the discovery of the wreckage on February 3, 2019. Sala’s body was recovered four days later, bringing a tragic end to the ordeal.
On the other hand, as a tribute to the late Emiliano Sala, a competition bearing his name, the Challenge Emiliano Sala, was established in 2021.
The tournament featured four of Sala’s previous clubs in France. Following an intense battle, Bordeaux emerged victorious, clinching the inaugural title of the Challenge Emiliano Sala.

Further, it has come to light that the pilot of the ill-fated plane had described the aircraft as “dodgy” and expressed intentions to wear a lifejacket during the journey.
The video captures Sala’s passage through airport security in France mere hours before boarding the flight that would ultimately end in disaster.
In the footage, Sala is observed removing his watch and passport, proceeding through the scanners, and retrieving his suitcase alongside pilot David Ibbotson, who also lost his life in the tragic crash in the English Channel near Guernsey.
Similarly, CCTV images obtained by BBC News also depict the plane taxiing towards the runway at Nantes Atlantique Airport.
Meanwhile, additional audio recordings have been made public, featuring Mr. Ibbotson expressing concerns about the aircraft following the outbound flight from Cardiff to France.
Not to mention, Sala himself had shared his apprehensions with friends in a voice note, expressing fear and describing the plane he was on as appearing to be “falling apart.”
He also expressed uncertainty about being found in the event of a crash, stating, “I don’t know if someone will look for me because they won’t find me.”
A subsequent inquest in March determined that the Argentine-born striker died from head and chest injuries while being deeply unconscious.
Additionally, it was also revealed that he had been exposed to toxic fumes emanating from Piper Malibu’s faulty exhaust system on the evening of January 21, 2019, the tragic night of the incident.
