A budding basketball prodigy has lost her Father and is in serious condition after being hit by a vehicle while strolling on a sidewalk in Louisville, Kentucky, last week.

After the tragedy, William “Trey” Arthur Jones III, a teacher and the Father of Iowa recruit Ava Jones, died on July 5. He was 42. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Amy and Ava Jones were classified in serious condition as of July 8. Ava Jones’ younger brother sustained minor injuries.

Ava Jones Car Accident: Iowa Basketball Star Health Update

In July 2021, Ava Jones, a rising star in women’s college basketball, was involved in a horrific vehicle accident that resulted in her Father’s death and significant injuries to herself and other family members. The catastrophe happened in Louisville, Kentucky, when they were walking on the sidewalk and were hit by a car.

Trey Jones, his wife, Amy, Ava, and her younger brother were all hit by a vehicle while touring downtown Louisville.

ESPN reports that Ava Jones, a 6-foot-2 senior basketball player for Nickerson High School in Nickerson, Kansas, competed in the Run 4 the Roses girls’ basketball tournament while she and her family were in Louisville. Ava Jones had verbally committed to play basketball for the University of Iowa two days before the accident.

“Ava is stable but critical,” Trey’s mother, Mary Jones, told the Hutchinson News in Kansas. “Amy is stable yet critical, but Amy has a lot going on.” Both are still on a [ventilator]. They’re attempting to free Ava, but it’s a slow process. Just take it slowly.”

The News results do not reveal anything about her health status. On the other hand, Ava was critically ill after suffering major leg injuries in the collision.

The Joneses are from Nickerson, Kansas, a community of around 1,000 people about 60 miles northwest of Wichita. Trey Jones taught carpentry and was the head track and field coach at Nickerson High School. His wife is the Nickerson USD 309 assistant superintendent.

Ava Jones and her parents were brought to the University of Louisville Hospital. At the same time, her younger brother was treated at Norton Children’s Hospital for “minor injuries,” according to LMPD spokesman Beth Ruoff.

Michael Hurley, 33, of Lexington, Indiana, was arrested and identified as the driver of the car that struck the Jones family by court paperwork, according to local news channel WDRB-TV in Louisville. According to the TV station, Hurley attempted to make a turn “but failed to negotiate the turn.” He drove into the sidewalk and hit the family.

According to the arrest record, Hurley informed arriving officers that he had just taken the painkiller hydrocodone and was “so exhausted he couldn’t make the turn.”

He is being detained at Louisville Metro Prison on allegations of assault, driving under the influence, and driving without a license. Following Trey Jones’ death, Police notified the Courier-Journal that the Jefferson County Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney charged Hurley with one count of murder and the other. His cash bond was set at USD 500,000.
