Sarah Huffman is a retired American professional soccer player best known for being Abby Wambach’s first wife. Huffman was born in Danbury, Connecticut, on March 5, 1984, 

She began playing soccer early, went to the University of Virginia, and played on the women’s soccer team, helping them win the NCAA championship in 2004.

Huffman went on to have a great professional career, playing for the Washington Freedom, Pali Blues, and Portland Thorns FC, among others. She was well-known for her defensive abilities and her versatility on the field.

According to TMZ, the wedding was conducted on October 5 at the Villas at Po’ipu Kai on the island of Kauai. It was attended by only the happy couple’s close friends and family members.

Many USWNT stars, notably standouts Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan, were in attendance. Leroux shared this shot on Instagram to mark the occasion. The couple divorced in 2016, and the divorce was formalized the following year. They had no children as a couple.

Despite their divorce, Huffman and Wambach are still on excellent terms and have openly expressed their love for one another. Wambach described Huffman as “one of my greatest pals in the world” in a 2019 interview. Huffman, for her part, has continued to work in soccer as the head coach of The College of New Jersey’s women’s soccer team.

Wambach was born in Rochester, New York, and reared in the Rochester neighborhood of Pittsford. She is the youngest of seven siblings born to Pete and Judy Wambach (two sisters and four brothers).

She began playing soccer at four, inspired by her sister’s desire to try the sport. Their mother borrowed a book from the library explaining how to play the game, and soccer became a family ritual.

“I think I was raised to do what I do today,” Wambach told ESPN. “Growing up as the youngest of seven children was like being in a team; you learn all kinds of skills… My siblings and sisters always played on the same level as me, and they never let me win until I was better than them and deserved it.

Being part of such a large family humbles you. You may have a particular ability or talent, but there is always someone better than you at something.

Wambach recalls her elder brothers toughening her by shooting hockey pucks at her for target practice. 

She was shifted from the girls’ squad to the boys’ team in her first youth soccer league at five after scoring 27 goals in only three games. She began avoiding defenders as a pre-teen by heading the ball over them and racing around them.
