Wambach was born in Rochester, New York, and reared in the Rochester neighborhood of Pittsford. She is the youngest of seven siblings born to Pete and Judy Wambach (two sisters and four brothers).
She began playing soccer at four, inspired by her sister’s desire to try the sport. Their mother borrowed a book from the library explaining how to play the game, and soccer became a family ritual.
“I think I was raised to do what I do today,” Wambach told ESPN. “Growing up as the youngest of seven children was like being in a team; you learn all kinds of skills… My siblings and sisters always played on the same level as me, and they never let me win until I was better than them and deserved it.
Being part of such a large family humbles you. You may have a particular ability or talent, but there is always someone better than you at something.
Wambach recalls her elder brothers toughening her by shooting hockey pucks at her for target practice.
She was shifted from the girls’ squad to the boys’ team in her first youth soccer league at five after scoring 27 goals in only three games. She began avoiding defenders as a pre-teen by heading the ball over them and racing around them.
