Julie Andrews was born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, on October 1, 1935to Barbara Ward Wells and Edward Charles Wells.

Her mother had an affair with a family friend, which was revealed to Julie in 1950. Her parents separated during World War II and remarried.

With the onset of World War II, Julie’s parents separated and eventually divorced. Both remarried: Barbara to Ted Andrews in 1943 and Edward to Winifred Maud Birkhead in 1944.

Julie’s stepfather, Ted Andrews, was also a performer and played a vital role in fostering her passion for singing and performing. 

Not to mention, Andrews was provided with lessons by her stepfather, who sponsored her education at the independent arts educational school Cone-Ripman School (also known as ArtsEd) in London.

Later, she received further instruction from Madame Lilian Stiles-Allen, a concert soprano and voice instructor.

After two years, in 1969, Andrews married American filmmaker Blake Edwards, and they remained married until Edwards died in 2010. During their marriage, they adopted two children, Amy and Joanna.
