Zoe Saldana was born in Passaic, New Jersey on June 19, 1978. Her parents were Puerto Rican Asalia Nazario and Dominican Aridio Saldana.
Nazario and her mother relocated to New York as little children to escape political unrest in the Dominican Republic.
In a Wired interview, Zoe revealed that she is Dominican and Puerto Rican.
She was raised bilingually in English and Spanish with her two sisters, Cisely and Mariel, with Spanish being their primary language at home. Most of her formative years were spent in Jackson Heights, Queens, of the Big City.
Their Father died in a vehicle crash when Saldana was nine years old. Her mother arranged for the three sisters to reside in the Dominican Republic with their late Father’s family.
So that she could afford to pay for the children’s private education, she kept working in New York.
The daughters’ stepfather, Dagoberto Galan, was married to widowed Asalia. They entirely regard him as their Father.

Saldana claimed that after marriage in July 2015, Perego adopted her last name. While Marco adopted the name Marco Perego-Saldana, Zoe changed her name to Zoe Saldana-Perego. They’d have Perego-Saldana descendants.
