“If the show can offer light escapism for people right now I think that there’s a place for that, and that’s positive. There’s a shot at the start and you can see the banners for the Ibiza opening parties 2020, which is obviously now an alternative universe.”
To this he added, “I think you could even make a case that White Lines has become like an episode of Black Mirror in this pandemic.”
Aside from the sense of freedom and reminiscent of ’90s, the show also touches on heavy subject of drug abuse and its consequences. Unlike other shows, White Lines does not in anyway glamorise drug use but instead shows the really negative outcome.
“I think it’s important how anything is portrayed… not to limit storytelling, but particularly on a big platform, I’d feel a responsibility as an actor… in being progressive in how the story is told.”
At the same time, Tom enjoyed filming for the show, revisiting the original retro style and trying on the wardrobes.
“Manchester in particular was so colorful, and there was an outpouring of creativity there during that time. The style was so colorful and eclectic, and a mish-mash of so many details. I love the little subtleties like the turn-ups of the jeans, and the shoes.”
