People are eager to know more about Sean Fields Lauren McCluskey – What Happened Between Them? Death Photos And Case Update
On October 22, 2018, 21-year-old track and field athlete, Sean Fields Lauren McCluskey, was tragically murdered on the campus of the University of Utah by Melvin Rowland, a man she had briefly dated.
Rowland, a convicted sex offender on parole, had been using a fake identity to deceive McCluskey. After she discovered the truth about his criminal history and ended the relationship, Rowland began harassing and threatening her.
Despite multiple calls to campus police for help in the weeks leading up to her murder, McCluskey did not receive the protection she needed and deserved. Recently, the University of Utah announced a $13.5 million settlement with the McCluskey family, admitting publicly for the first time that her death could have been prevented.
The settlement will provide $10.5 million to McCluskey’s parents and $3 million to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation, which will work to promote campus safety, animal welfare, and amateur athletics.
Who killed Lauren McCluskey?
Melvin Rowland killed Sean Fields Lauren McCluskey, a man she briefly dated who had lied about his identity and was a convicted sex offender. Rowland had met McCluskey during the summer of 2018, posing as a 28-year-old student named Shawn Fields.
However, when McCluskey discovered he was a 37-year-old convicted sex offender on parole, she broke off the relationship. After the breakup, Rowland began harassing and extorting McCluskey, making threats against her and her family.
In the two weeks before the attack, McCluskey and her mother had called campus police more than a dozen times seeking help, but the University failed to check into Rowland’s background.
On the night of the killing, McCluskey was on the phone with her mother, Jill McCluskey, when Rowland attacked her on the University of Utah campus. Her body was later found in a parked car.
After the killing, Rowland fled the scene and later killed himself in a nearby church. Police later discovered evidence that he had purchased the gun used in the killing illegally from a pawn shop.
The University of Utah later admitted that it had failed to handle McCluskey’s case appropriately and that its employees had not fully understood or responded appropriately to her situation. The university has since settled with the McCluskey family, and measures have been taken to improve campus safety and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Where is Melvin Rowland Now?
Melvin Rowland, the man who killed Sean Fields Lauren McCluskey, is deceased. He killed himself hours after the murder, as Police closed in on him in a downtown Salt Lake City church.
Following a brief foot chase, Rowland entered the church, where he died by suicide. According to authorities, Rowland used a gun to shoot himself.
Before his suicide, Rowland was on parole after serving time in prison for charges of attempted forcible sex abuse and enticing a minor. He had also spent time in federal prison for possessing a weapon by a prohibited person.
The University of Utah, where McCluskey was a student and where Rowland was seen frequently, has faced criticism for not doing enough to protect her despite the repeated complaints she and her mother made to campus police.
The university later admitted it could have done more to prevent McCluskey’s death.
While Rowland is no longer alive to face the consequences for his actions, the university has agreed to a $13.5 million settlement with the McCluskey family.
The settlement acknowledges that Lauren’s death could have been prevented and will fund the Lauren McCluskey Foundation, which focuses on campus safety, animal welfare, and amateur athletics.
