Samantha Maldonado, a trained engineer who grew up in Ecuador, tragically lost her life at the Loop CTA platform.
Her ex-boyfriend, Alejandro Arellano, was responsible for her murder.
According to prosecutors, the two had met at Miller’s Pub on S. Wabash Ave. approximately an hour before the incident.
Police reports suggest that Arellano had followed Maldonado after she left the pub.
Maldonado walked up the steps of the Adams/Wabash ‘L’ stop at around 1:26 am on a Saturday before the large crowds arrived for downtown St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

A 26-year-old, Samantha Maldonado, was murdered by Alejandro Arellano.
Authorities have disclosed that the two individuals were former co-workers who had been in a romantic relationship for approximately 5 to 6 months before their breakup, one week before the stabbing incident.
According to a bond proffer, Maldonado and Arellano met at Miller’s Pub at 201 S. Wabash around 12:30 am on Saturday, March 11, 2023. Approximately 5 to 10 seconds after Maldonado left the bar around 1:20 am, Arellano followed her.
The CTA surveillance video showed that Arellano trailed Maldonado to the Adams and Wabash CTA train platform.
As Maldonado ascended the stairs to the platform, Arellano produced a folding knife, court documents revealed.
Maldonado hastened to the top of the stairs and concealed herself behind a CTA equipment box.
However, Arellano eventually found her hiding place. As Maldonado attempted to board a train that had just arrived at the station, Arellano prevented her by pulling her away from the train doors, according to authorities.
After the stabbing, Maldonado managed to descend the stairs of the CTA platform, but she subsequently collapsed in the middle of the street.
Civilians and security personnel from Miller’s Pub promptly came to her aid. Paramedics were summoned to the location, and when they arrived, Maldonado informed them that Alejandro Arellano was responsible for the attack and provided his date of birth.
She was then transported to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, her injuries proved fatal, and she was later pronounced dead.

Alejandro Arellano was arrested and accused of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend on a Loop CTA platform over the weekend after the victim had given his name to the Police before passing away.
According to prosecutors, Chicago Police arrested Arellano at his residence within 15 hours of the stabbing. When he was arrested, he had a bloodied knife in his possession.
Prosecutors added that Arellano admitted to officers that he had “poked” his ex-girlfriend with a “blade.”
He was taken into custody less than 14 hours after the authorities reported that he had committed the stabbing.
Arellano was apprehended in the 1600 block of North Kimball Avenue around 3 pm and was charged with one count of first-degree murder, which is a felony offense.

A friend or relative wrote on the GoFundMe page for Maldonado’s funeral expenses, describing her as a genuinely unique and lovely person.
They stated that conversing with her was akin to being reminded of what true joy and generosity embodied in a person.
She was dedicated and passionate in everything she did, including her job, family, education, and even taking English classes in Chicago to enhance her ability to connect with others.
