Three JMU (James Madison University) students, including Nicholas Troutman, died in a car accident on February 2, 2023, Thursday Night.

Hardy County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the car accident occurred on West Virginia Route 259 at about 10:30 pm near the West Virginia-Virginia State Line.
Nicholas Troutman Obituary: Parents And Family Mourns The Death Of JMU Students
Nicholas Troutman was a James Madison University sophomore majoring in business management from Richmond.
The sophomore was at the tender age of 19 during the tragic incident which took his life along with his two other friends.
Nicholas is survived by his loving parents and a close-knit family who will cherish their memories with him forever. They have decided to remain extremely discrete and private about his funeral proceedings.

Nicholas Troutman Obituary: Other Victims And Cause Of Crash
Along with Nicholas Troutman, two other students named John “Luke” Fergusson and Joshua Mardis died in the tragic car accident on West Virginia-Virginia State Line.
Additionally, two other students, a driver, and a passenger, were involved in the car crash and were critically injured caused by the crash’s impact. They were rushed to a local hospital immediately upon the arrival of authorities.
Like Nicholas Troutman, John “Luke” Fergusson and Joshua Mardis were also sophomore students at James Madison University.
John was a student pursuing a degree in media arts and design from Richmond, and Joshua was pursuing a degree in communication studies from Williamsburg.
The other two students who survived the crash were also sophomores at JMU, but their guardians have decided to keep their identities discrete for privacy reasons.
Police said that the car involved in the case, which they didn’t identify, hit a tree when it was traveling south on W. Va. 259.
According to WTVR News, Hardy County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson wrote in an email that the deputies could determine the involved vehicle had been carrying five passengers and traveling south before leaving the roadway and striking a tree.
The Police department mentioned that the wreck is still under investigation and the cause of the car crash is unclear, and they are not sure if it was because of driving under the influence.

JMU Shares Information on the loss of students
On February 03, 2023, JMU shared the news of the death of three of its students via its “University Communications Portal App” to all the students of the University.
They shared their sincere condolences to the family, friends, and others with close connections to the three students they lost.
JMU then mentioned the students’ names: John “Luke” Fergusson, Nicholas Troutman, and Joshua Mardis, their class, and the significant they were pursuing.
They added that the three young men will always be remembered as Dukes and forever be in their hearts.
JMU also listed resources like Timely Care, JMU’s Counseling Center, Emergency Assistance Services, Self-help Resources, and JMU’s Employee Assistance Program to help the other students prevent future happenings.
