In February 2022, he revealed his diagnosis on his Instagram profile, disclosing his advanced stomach malignancy. He suffered painful eyes following a game towards the end of 2021, and his symptoms had not eased for quite some time.
Fujii stated, “The symptoms of the eyes appear to be impacted by the metastasis of stomach Cancer to the brain. There might be many metastases.”

He said, “When I was initially diagnosed, I was astonished, concerned, terrified, and felt various emotions, but with the loving support of my family and teammates, I have a strong resolve to move forward and fight this sickness. You will undoubtedly feel rejuvenated after converting massive energy into power.”
Fujii’s prognosis shocked the Japanese volleyball community, who lamented his death after he died. The Japan Volleyball Association expressed sympathy for his family.
Kawai was taken aback by the news and praised Fujii’s abilities. “Please rest in peace,” he said at the end of his speech. I beg him to rest in peace from the bottom of my heart.”
Volley Trails expressed their sadness on Twitter after learning of the death of the brilliant and skilled volleyball player. Shunichi Kawai, Head of the Japan Volleyball Association, also sent a tribute to the late player.
