The neonatal intensive care unit at Chester, England’s Countess of Chester Hospital experienced extremely high infant mortality rates between 2015 and 2016.

The reasons for the sudden rise in deaths were the subject of a number of investigations.

After a protracted inquiry, Lucy Letby, a nurse who was employed by the hospital at the time, was detained in 2018 on suspicion of eight counts of suspected murder and six counts of attempted murder.

She was granted bail in expectation of additional investigations. Letby was detained once more in 2019 on suspicion of eight homicides and nine attempted murders. This time, she was freed on bail pending further inquiries.

Letby was last found in November 2020 and charged with eight killings and ten attempted murders at the time.

Letby’s research began in October 2022 and is expected to be finished in six months.

Lucy Letby Trial Update

The six-month long hearing for Letby began on October 10th, 2022, at Manchester Crown Court before Mr. Justice Goss. Regarding ten infants and seven murder charges as well as fifteen attempted murder charges, she filed a not guilty plea.

The accused victims were referred to in reports as Children A to Q because their identities were withheld. Letby’s parents and the family members of the accused victims were present during the trial.

The prosecution showed the jurors a purported confession that Letby allegedly wrote on a post-it note on the fourth day of the trial.

In it, she allegedly confessed that she had killed the animals on purpose because she “couldn’t take care of them” and that she was “evil” for doing so.

Letby’s note was allegedly a “he anguished outpouring of a young woman in fear and despair when she realises the enormity of what’s being said about her, in the moment to herself,” according to the defense.

The note was allegedly written while Letby was dealing with employment issues, including a grievance procedure with the NHS trust.

Recently, In the testimony at Manchester Crown Court, Dr. Stephen Brearey said that after two newborn boys died on successive days in June 2016, he raised the matter with the nursing director, Karen Rees.

The infants, identified as Childs O and P, were reportedly the 33-year-old Letby’s 15th and 16th victims between June 2015 and June 2016. Letby denies killing seven infants and making ten additional attempts between June 2015 and June 2016.

Prior to the afternoon of June 23 when he experienced a “remarkable deterioration,” Child O was stable and in excellent health, according to evidence provided to the court. Infant O later passed away after that.
