Who Is Kem Sokha Wife Te Chanmono? Kids And Family

Kem Sokha has been married to his wife, Te Chanmono, for more than two decades. The couple has been going strong even after years of marriage. 

His wife is his strength. Chanmono has always supported him and respected him for what he does. Te never hesitates to take a stand for her husband.

In 2006, the wife of the head of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) met with her husband, Kem Sokha, when she was arrested and imprisoned in Placer Prison. He was allowed to see her for 30 minutes. 

She said that; it was Human Rights Day, and he was not responsible for the event because he was in the hospital.

Te added- the previous actions were only related to human rights and democracy and did not discriminate against anyone.

The couple shares two daughters. They are Kem Monovithya and Kem Samathida. Both of their daughters are human rights activists.

Born on 2 October 1981, Kem Monovithya is the eldest daughter of Kem Sokha and Te Chanmono.

Monovithya is a member of the Permanent Committee of the Cambodia National Rescue Party. Similarly, she has been a Deputy Director-General of Public Affairs since 2013.

Monovithya is currently in exile following the country’s political crisis in 2017, following the arrest of his father and the dissolution of the Cambodia National Rescue Party.

Since then, she has led an overseas campaign to restore Cambodia’s democracy. Her advocacy has drawn threats to change the Constitution to remove her from the ruling regime, the deputy prime minister.

Likewise, Kem Sokha’s youngest daughter strongly supports him. Monovithya and Samathida’s strong reactions came days after their dad publicly dissociated himself from Rainsy, who continued associating them with political activities.

Kem Samthida, daughter of Kem Sokha, reacted to former CNRP chief Sam Rainsy’s statements that her dad supported a new movement to pressure the government, asking the public to respect her father’s wishes. 

Who is Kem Sokha? Political Career Explored

Kem Sokha is Cambodia’s leading human rights leader. Currently, he is a Member of Parliament and Vice Speaker of the National Assembly of Cambodia (the lower house of Cambodia’s parliament).

Born into a poor family, he had a difficult childhood. He studied law at the Royal University of Law and Economics, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and then worked for the Cambodian government.

At that time, Cambodia was under the occupation of Vietnam. Unhappy with the state of the government, he secretly supported the Cambodian group resisting the Vietnamese occupation.

As a result, he came under government scrutiny and was compelled to quit. He entered politics and traveled through various parties and organizations before forming a new political party, Human Rights Party, in 2007.

Through this venture, he worked rigorously on human rights issues and organized public forums throughout Cambodia. 

In 2012, Human Rights Party merged with the Sam Rainsy Party to form the Cambodia National Rescue Party. He is known for his strong advocacy for respect for human rights.

His phrase “Do Min Do” (literally translated into English: “To Change or Change”) became the Cambodia National Salvation Party’s election campaign song in July 2013.
