On April 9, 2023, Easter Sunday, leaders of the Covenant of the Cross Church in Nashville signed a letter before their holiday service, calling for Jones to be reinstated.
The letter was signed by four elders and the church’s pastor and was subsequently sent to the city’s metro council.
The council then held a special meeting on Monday to discuss Jones’ expulsion from the House of Representatives.

Nashville Reinstates Justin Jones to Tennessee House Following GOP Ouster
Four days after being expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives, Democrat Justin Jones was reinstated as an interim representative by a unanimous vote of the Nashville Metropolitan Council, according to CNN.
Jones, who represents Nashville’s House District 52, was ousted after calling for gun reform during a protest on the chamber floor, along with another Black Democrat, Justin Pearson.
He returned to the House floor to cheers and was introduced as “our newest member” by fellow Democrat Rep. Antonio Parkinson.
After the city council’s decision, Jones joined demonstrators in a march to the state Capitol. State law permits local legislative bodies to appoint interim House members to fill the seats of expelled lawmakers until an election is held.
The 36-0 vote to return Jones to his seat followed a vote to suspend a procedural rule.
