The American photographer Jimmy Chin was born on October 12, 1973, in Mankato, Minnesota, United States of America. He is the son of Chinese parents, Frank Chin and Yen Yen Chin.

Jimmy’s interest in climbing started while he was a student at Carleton. From there, his passion and love for rock climbing kept on growing. Similarly, he miraculously fell in love with photography after borrowing his climbing partner’s camera to take a photo.

Before he was asked to join the National Geographic expedition in 2002, Jimmy had already organized numerous climbing expeditions to Pakistan’s Karakoram Mountains. His voyage in the remote Chang Tang Plateau was documented in Rick Ridgeway‘s book The Big Open. Furthermore, it was even featured in National Geographic’s April 2003 issue.

In 2006, Jimmy became one of the only people to get to the Everest Base Camp and ski off the summit of Mount Everest with Kit and Rob DesLauriers. Throughout his career, Jimmy had led many expeditions in the uncharted territory of many countries such as China, Pakistan, Nepal, Tanzania, Mali, South Africa, and many more.

Along with climbing, Jimmy also shared a passion for photography and film making. In 2011, he made a feature-length documentary Meru, in collaboration with his wife, Elizabeth. Likewise, the film went on to win the US Audience Documentary Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
