Born as Philip John Clapp, affectionately known as “P.J.,” in Knoxville, Tennessee, Johnny Knoxville’s Father, Philip (1935–2018), supported the family as a tire and car salesman, while his mother, Lemoyne Clapp (née Houck; 1938–2017), dedicated her time to teaching Sunday school.

Knoxville grew up in a modest household with two older sisters by his side. Knoxville’s fascination with extreme sports and daring stunts took hold from an early age.

Engaging in skateboarding and embracing various dangerous activities, Johnny laid the groundwork for his future vocation as a stunt performer.

After finishing high school, Knoxville briefly enrolled at the “American Academy of Dramatic Arts” before discontinuing his studies. Determined to pursue an entertainment industry career, he relocated to Los Angeles.

On May 15, 1995, Johnny Knoxville tied the knot to Melanie Lynn Cates.

The pair had a daughter on January 4, 1996. However, after eleven years of marriage, Knoxville and Cates separated in July 2006, leading to Knoxville filing for divorce on July 3, 2007. 

The legal dissolution of their marriage was finalized in March 2008, with the ultimate settlement of divorce arrangements occurring in July 2009.

Subsequently, on August 18, 2009, Knoxville publicly announced that he and his lovely girlfriend, Naomi Nelson, were expecting their first child together.

Nelson gave birth to a son in Los Angeles in December of that year. The couple then proceeded to exchange marriage vows on September 24, 2010.

Naomi again gave birth, this time to a daughter, in October 2011, also in Los Angeles. However, news emerged on June 17, 2022, reporting that Knoxville had filed for divorce from his wife, indicating a subsequent end to their marital relationship.
