Hoda Kotb was born on August 4, 1964, in Norman, Oklahoma, USA. She was born to Egyptian parents. You might be wondering what her name means. Her name ‘Hoda’ means ‘guidance,’ and ‘Kotb’ means ‘pole’ in Arabic. Kotb went to Virginia Tech in 1986 to pursue her Bachelor’s degree. She completed her graduation from Virginia Tech in broadcast journalism.
She was a member of TriDelta Sorority at Virginia Tech and was also the keynote speaker. Her name is difficult to pronounce. Realizing this fact, at the beginning of her career, she spelled her last name as ‘Kotb.’ However, she again changed it to its original form ‘Kotb.’ Maybe, she felt proud to represent herself.
Hoda has a brother called Adel and a sister named Hala. Her mother, Sameha Kotb, works at the Library of Congress. Regarding her educational history, there is no accurate data on the subjects which she concentrated in the universities.
She started her career in broadcasting by becoming a news assistant in the year 1986. In 1986, she became the news assistant in Cairo. From the year 1986 to 1989, she worked as a morning anchor and an assignment reporter. After that, she worked as a correspondent for Dateline NBC in 1998. She became the weekend anchor and reporter at WWL-TV for nearly two years. From the year 2004 to 2007, she was the host of the series, Your Total Health.
Her first job after finishing college was at WXVT in Mississippi. From 1992 to 1998, she was an anchor and reporter for WWL-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since 2008, she became the co-host on the Today show with her partner Kathie Lee Gifford. Before her, Matt Lauer was the host.
However, he was fired due to accusations of sexual misconduct. After that, she had joined as interim co-host for the first two hours, but, due to her excellent performance, she was named the official co-host on January 2, 2018. It was the first time in Today’s history that two females hosted the show.
Furthermore, she has made appearances in different popular Television shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, 30 Rock, and Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce. In 2005, Kotb married Burzis Kanga. He was a tennis coach at the University of New Orleans. In 2008, they divorced. They had first met on Valentine’s day and got also divorced on the same day. Burzis mentioned that it was a hard time for everyone and his immatureness for the reason of divorce. In 2007, she had to undergo a mastectomy to treat her breast cancer.
Realizing that many women suffer from this disease, she became an advocate for breast cancer awareness. Her whole story was captured in Today show as she worked there. The show documented her story after she was cancer-free. In 2015, she revealed her relationship with New York financier Joel Schiffman.
