According to the FBI, the group traveled from Brownsville, Texas, to Matamoros. They arrived in a white minivan with North Carolina license plates intending to buy medicine but found themselves trapped in the crossfire between two armed groups, according to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

According to paperwork discovered in their vehicle, the four Americans were in Mexico for a medical procedure, a U.S. official with knowledge of the incident told CNN.

The official claimed that the cartel thugs thought the group was a smuggling operation for Haitians.

On Monday, Ken Salazar, the American envoy to Mexico, said that the attack claimed the life of an “innocent” Mexican citizen.

He stated that several American justice organizations collaborated with their Mexican peers to locate the American citizens who had gone missing, but he did not provide any further information.

One of the shooters is seen leading a woman to a pickup truck, where she is forced to lie on the flatbed.

His accomplice is dragging a man across the street before throwing two more male victims into the vehicle.

No, the kidnappers have not been arrested yet.

According to an investigation by the FBI station in San Antonio, the car was attacked shortly after it crossed into Mexico.

Four Americans were “taken from the site in a vehicle by armed men,” the office stated.

For intelligence that results in the arrest of the offenders and the safe return of the victims, the FBI is offering a $50,000 reward.

One witness to the kidnapping told The Associated Press that the minivan was struck by another vehicle at a junction before being shot.

Eventually, an SUV arrived, and several men exited it.

It is well known that Matamoros is home to rival Gulf Cartel factions.

The risk presented by shootouts between rival gangs prompted the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros to issue a warning on Friday.

No information was provided regarding the number of fatalities and injuries recorded by the Tamaulipas state authorities on Friday.

Matamoros is situated in one of the six states in Mexico that the U.S. Department of State has currently classified as one of its most serious “do not travel” zones due to the local cartels’ potential for robbing and kidnapping American tourists.

According to Alto al Secuestro, an organization that supports abduction victims, at least 1,271 people will be abducted in Mexico in 2022.
