And then there was one. Finally, after 16 long years in Grey’s Anatomy, Alex Karev has ended his journey from a medical intern to a resident who came to an end tonight. In the episode titled, ‘Leave A Light On,‘ the departure of Dr. Karev was explained, and fans were not entirely happy about it.
Alex Karev’s Departure- Spoiler Alert
The letter that Meredith received explained the reason why he left. He explained how he left Jo for his old love, Izzie Stevens played by Katherine Heigl, one of the five central characters on the show.
Similarly, Alex and Izzie’s love story came to an abrupt end when a cancer survivor Izzie left the show on Season 6. She moved to Seattle after Dr. Karev refused to resume their marriage.
So, one can see how shocked fans were upon finding that after a decade, Karev has moved to pursue his old love. As if his departure was not enough. Another shocking plot twist of Grey’s Anatomy, Alex revealed Izzie gave birth to twins and that he is a father!
Likewise, Dr. Alex revealed that Izzie conceived the twins with frozen embryos after her character left the show.
All this time and even until last week, the fans thought Alex was visiting his aging mother in Iowa. Oh, how gullible we are genuine.
Nonetheless, the letter provided the context that the two rekindled their relationship after Karev reached out to Izzie to help Meredith protect her medical license.
“I’m Finally Exactly Where I Should Be”
Not only did the show dropped the surprise bomb on its fans, but it also stated that Alex, as of now, is living a happy life with Izzie and his two children on a farm in Kansas.
Many fans could not believe that their beloved pediatric surgeon would just run off to his old love leaving Jo alone. And even Grey’s Anatomy Alex Karev thought so too.
In his letter to Jo, Alex tried to explain his decision to leave her. It read,
“I have a chance to make this family whole, and I just hope you loved me back enough to let me take it.”
To this, he added,
“I’m finally exactly where I should be. I never had that before.”
However, he did not forget to consider his precipitate action and the situation that he left Jo in. On top of his letter to Jo, he wrote, “You’re more than a letter. This right here, this cowardice, this letter, it’s officially the worst thing I’ve ever done.”
The emotional episode was filled with flashbacks scenes; most of them recounted the epic romance between Alex and Izzie.
There Is Really No Good Way To Say Goodbye
Grey’s Anatomy fans are well aware of the show and have witnessed many original casts left the show over the decades. While Karev had to be written off in light of Chamber’s exit, it was not an easy task for Grey’s Anatomy showrunner and executive producer Krista Vernoff.
“It is nearly impossible to say goodbye to Alex Karev,” Krista said in a statement on Thursday.
“That is as true for me and for all of the writers at Grey’s Anatomy’ as it is for the fans. We have loved writing Alex. And we have loved watching Justin Chambers’ nuanced portrayal of him. For 16 seasons, 16 years, we have grown up alongside Alex Karev.”
She further went on and explained how the journey has been tough for both sides.
“We have been frustrated by his limitations, and his growth has inspired us, and we have come to love him deeply and to think of him as one of our very best friends. We will miss him terribly. And we will always be grateful; for his impact, on our show, on our hearts, on our fans, on the world.”
Moreover, Chambers is not the first to leave the show suddenly in the course of its run. Before him, the original cast members like Heigl, Isaiah Washington, Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey left the show in an abrupt manner.
Nonetheless, the episode got the fans going rampant on social media, especially on Twitter, threatening to quit ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ entirely.
