Former Utah Congresswoman Mia Love had three kids with her husband, Jason Love.

Mia Love, the first Black woman elected to Congress as a Republican, passed away on March 23, 2025, at 49, after a long battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Utah Gov Spencer Cox called Love “a true trailblazer and visionary leader” in a post about her death. Cox said, 

“Abby and I are heartbroken by the passing of our dear friend Mia Love. A true trailblazer and visionary leader, Mia inspired countless Utahns through her courage, grace, and unwavering belief in the American dream. Her legacy leaves a lasting, positive impact on our state. We will miss her deeply,”

Earlier in May 2024, Mia Love appeared on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” to explain her 2022 diagnosis of glioblastoma brain cancer, or GBM. 

Love told Tapper she began receiving immunotherapy every three weeks in August 2023 as part of a clinical trial at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University. 

She discussed her hopeful outlook despite her then-prognosis of 10-15 months to live, which she surpassed, and how her Mormon faith has helped her persevere. Love said, 

“I was looking for a cure in my faith and in science,” “Funny thing is, my patriarchal blessing said you will have a long and prosperous life, a rich and rewarding life, so long as you decide to remain in public service.”

Mia Love’s Daughter Abigale Announced That The Treatments Were No Longer Effective Against The Tumor

Former Utah Congresswoman Mia Love had three kids: Alessa, Abigale, and Peyton Love

On Saturday, March 1, 2025, Abigale announced on social media that the treatments were no longer effective against the tumor, and the family was moving “from treatment to enjoying remaining time with her.”

Through Mia’s Twitter account, Abigale announced

“Hello Friends, I’m Mia’s daughter Abigale. Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer,”

She added, 

 “Sadly her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing. We have shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her.”

Mia Love’s elder daughter, Alessa Archibald, pursued her degree in mechanical engineering at Utah State University – College of Engineering in 2023

Per her LinkedIn profile, she is a tooling and process engineer at Northrop Grumman.

Follwing Mia’s death, Alessa paid a small tribute through her Instagram handle. She wrote, 

“My mother, my hero, my best friend. “There are no words to describe the loss that aches within our hearts. She was the light in every tunnel, the laughter in our home, and the safety we could always run to. “Not a day went by where we questioned if we were loved. My daughter will never go a day questing if her Ima loved her.”

On the other hand, Mia’s son Peyton Love is in a relationship with BreeAnn Losee. Peyton took his official Instagram handle and posted a video dancing with his mother, Mia, as a tribute and wrote,

Currently, Peyton, Abigale, and Alessa are mourning the loss of their supportive and devoted mother, Mia Love. 

Mia and Jason Love Tied The knot Just Four Months After Their First Date

A political figure and commentator, Mia Love, who served as the U.S. representative for Utah’s 4th congressional district, tied the knot with Jason Love in December 1998 after dating for four months. 

They first settled in American Fork, Utah, and later moved to Saratoga Springs.

 

Even after Mia was elected to Congress, the couple decided Jason would keep working in software and continue living in Utah to keep things grounded for their family. 

Jason’s LinkedIn profile shows that he pursued his master’s degree at the University of Utah and served as Vice President of Product at Verisk Analytics, Inc., until February 2025.

  • Mia Love was born to Haitian parents in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. 
  • In January 2023, Mia Love published a memoir titled Qualified: Finding Your Voice, Leading with Character, and Empowering Others through the Hachette Book Group. 
  • Love’s birth enabled her parents to gain a U.S. residency permit under an immigration law that favored immigrants from the Western Hemisphere who had a child born in the United States; the law expired in January 1976, just 25 days after Love’s birth.
