Eugene Lee Yang, “I’m not just queer-I’m a gay man.”
Eugene Lee Yang, a member of ‘Try Guys,’ came out as a gay man in his style on Sunday night, June 16, 2019. The 34-year-old youtube personality was known for being Queer since long ago, but many people often questioned his sexuality. Since being a queer necessarily does not make you a gay or lesbian, all of us thought that Eugene was straight.
Furthermore, when asked about the necessity for this video to confirm his sexuality, Eugene said to Advocate and we quote,
“Even if it’s just the smallest thing, like what label I go by, I think to find the truth and express it with full confidence….. I’m just announcing I’m a gay filmmaker, actor, producer, and viral video maker, whatever you want to call me- but I’m gay, and that’s the perspective I’m coming from.”
The internet personality took full control of this production, including script, choreography, and even directed the video. Likewise, he made this video to confirm his sexual orientation and acted as a fundraiser for the Trevor Project. To clarify, the Trevor Project is a non-profit organization whose main aim is to prevent suicide rates among LGBTQ individuals.
Through this video in just two days, Yang has already raised more than $65,000 for the Trevor Project.
Since his secret is out, Eugene’s social media is overflowing with congratulatory messages from his peers and family. And even we are happy to know that in this pride month, Eugene is taking pride in being a gay man. You can watch the sensational video right here.
It’s impressive how Eugene has shown his emotions and things he went through in a short 5 minutes video. Some may even mistake it as an art film were it not for the title to guide us. Likewise, the video has successfully garnered 15 million views and more than 1.5 million likes.
‘Mulan’ Helped Him Come Out
We would be lying if we say that Eugene’s video coming out as gay did not surprise us. In fact, hardly anyone suspected of him being the one. So, when Yang dropped the news, many fans and we alike were eager to know his thoughts up close.
Luckily, just four days after his video dropped, Eugene sat with YouTuber Hannah Hart and expressed how the movie ‘Mulan’ helped him come out to the world. Yes, you heard that right! Mulan, as in Disney’s animation about a legendary warrior who turned into a man and fought for the country.
Apparently, Mulan was Yang’s first Asian hero while growing up. To this, he was able to rationalize why the character had so much significance for him. He explained.
“‘Mulan’ is a really clear story where, particularly, her gender expression was so woven into this narrative. It was this unquestionable part of her that she expressed in ways that everyone accepted. That moved in me ways I didn’t even understand as a kid.”
As a matter of fact, Mulan has long been praised for its unintentionally LGBTQ-friendly storyline. Since Yang was not aware of his sexuality, he did not quite grasp the impact the movie had on him.
Moreover, to this, he also acknowledged the stigma that coming out carries in many Asian countries. Eugene wished to help those in need from the LGBTQ in the future.
