On June 11, 2015, the wrestling world lost one of its legends Dusty Rhodes, also known as “The American Dream.” He was a professional wrestler, booker, and trainer affiliating with NWA and WWE.

Dusty Rhodes Had Stomach Cancer 

The deceased ex-wrestler was grappling with numerous health issues before his passing, and Stomach Cancer was one of them.

Sadly, the wrestler’s life was cut short despite his weight loss efforts, and his final recorded weight was 275 pounds.

Many fans believe that the cause of death was Dusty Rhodes Cancer, but it likely was not the case, albeit it’s one of the reasons that deteriorated his health massively.

A day before Dusty Rhodes’ death, emergency services were dispatched to his home in Orlando, FL, on Wednesday morning.

The emergency call stated that a 69-year-old man had stumbled and fallen. Rhodes was swiftly taken to a hospital nearby, where he passed away Thursday morning.

Upon discovering his hospitalization, the wrestler’s closest family members immediately made their way to his bedside. 

Rhodes experienced a series of complications between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, ultimately leading to the announcement of his passing.

The story of Dusty Rhodes’ death would be incomplete without reference to the 9-1-1 call placed by his wife on June 10, 2015, reporting his fall at home.

In the days following his death, TMZ made public a recording of the emergency call, in which the dispatcher’s rudeness caused his wife to hang up.

Fans expressed great disappointment with the 9-1-1 dispatcher, who failed to remain calm and helpful during the call. Other people believed that the tape released by TMZ was insensitive and in poor taste and should not have been made public.

Dusty Rhodes Health Condition Before Death

“The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes was highly ill in his later years. As mentioned above, he had stomach Cancer and kidney disease.

In the United States, stomach Cancer accounts for approximately 1.5% of all new Cancer cases diagnosed each year. Similarly, It is estimated that more than 15% of U.S. adults, or 37 million individuals, suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

Sadly, Dusty Rhodes was battling both in his last few years. He spent most of his time traveling to the hospital for his monthly checkups and therapies.

On June 10, 2015, after he fell, his wife called paramedics to his home in Orlando, Florida. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died the next day from kidney failure at 69.

Rhodes was cremated after his passing, and his son Dustin honored his memory by spreading his ashes on a ranch he used to visit in November 2015.

Dusty Rhodes Legacy: The American Dream

Rhodes is highly regarded as one of the best wrestlers, with his charming personality and interview skills being highly praised. His “Hard Times” promo is renowned as one of the greatest interviews in professional wrestling.

Jim Cornette stated that Rhodes’ NWA World title reigns were brief as he didn’t meet the NWA’s ideal for a champion, but failing to win the title would have diminished his credibility.

In honor of Rhodes, a ten-bell salute was performed at the 2015 Money in the Bank pay-per-view, featuring the WWE roster and the McMahon family gathered on the entrance ramp.

WWE honored him with a video tribute and a particular segment on the WWE Network the next night on Raw. Furthermore, NXT held another ten-bell salute in his memory during their tapings.

While working as a producer in WCW, Rhodes provided support and guidance to numerous wrestlers, helping to advance their careers.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, a tag team tournament in tribute to Rhodes, was introduced by WWE’s NXT in August 2015 and has been an annual tradition. In 2021, the game expanded to include a women’s division.

The promo room at the WWE Performance Center, where Rhodes once taught, features a puppet of Rhodes hanging on the equipment, symbolizing his eternal vigilance over the students.
