After his ski accident, he became aware that he was still breathing and found himself lying on his stomach in a Superman pose without any superpowers.
Deviating from his friends’ path while skiing made him feel physically and medically humbled by a new form of an old sensation – powerlessness.
As they skied down the slope in Colorado, he noticed a 6-foot snow berm on his way leading to a flat cat track, which are the flatter trails used by snowcats to move around a mountain.
The last thing he remembered was skiing across it, but he suddenly woke up on the ground. His neck was turned to the left, and the hard surface of the ground was pressing against his right cheek.
He saw blood next to his nose and tried to reach and stop it, but his arms were pinned behind him and wouldn’t move.

Dr David Langer Biography: A Look At His Career
Dr David Langer started his career in neurosurgery.
In 2013, Dr. Langer was recruited by Northwell Health to establish a neurosurgery department at Lenox Hill Hospital.
He has since developed it into one of the top 50 hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery in the U.S. He maintains an active practice in treating spinal disease and benign brain tumors.
Langer earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania before attending the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, where he earned his Medical degree in 1991.
While at the University of Pennsylvania, he worked with Kate Kariko, Ph.D. as an undergraduate medical student and neurological surgical resident.
