Shawn Southerland caused the death of Christie Neely by strangling her in their Bayonne apartment in 2007. Late Jordan Neely said the killing happened because of a very unstable and chaotic relationship involving frequent disagreements and fights.

Southerland put Neely’s body in a suitcase and left it on the side of the Henry Hudson Parkway in the Bronx. Neely was found on April 7, 2007, and her jewelry was shown in the media to help recognize her.

In just 48 hours, Neely’s Father was able to recognize her body, and one of her acquaintances recognized her jewelry. Bayonne Police found proof that resulted in Southerland being taken into custody.

People working at a Bayonne shop recognized Southerland as the one who bought the suitcase where Neely’s body was discovered. DNA tests proved that Neely was also put in a smaller suitcase that Southerland bought on the same day.

In 2012, Southerland got arrested in Philadelphia. Later, he was found guilty of killing Neely in a trial without a jury. He represented himself during the trial. He got 30 years in jail and must complete it all before being supervised for five years after getting out.
