Chris Street Death Cause: What Happened To Iowa Basketball Star?
Thirty years ago, the men’s basketball team at the University of Iowa, known as the Iowa Hawkeye, was devasted by the tragic passing of its Power Forward, Chris Street.
Chris Street’s death cause was confirmed as a car accident. On January 19, 1993, Street was killed when his car collided with a snow plow.
He had just gone for a team dinner at the Highlander Inn.
Chris Street’s girlfriend, Kin Vinton Klinedinst, was in the passenger seat of the same car during the tragic car accident.
However, she miraculously survived the accident.
Although Kin survived, she had a punctured lung, broken ribs, and a separated shoulder.
She hurriedly went to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she had to stay for several weeks for treatment.
Following the death of the Iowan Basketball star, the basketball match against Northwestern was postponed, which was scheduled for the following night.
Chris’ funeral took place on January 22, 1993, where all Iowa Hawkeye players were present along with their coach Tom Davis.

Tributes were poured to Chris Street wholeheartedly from all the fans and fellow rivals who were engaged with NCAA Men’s Basketball League.
His coach Tom Davis said that Chris was a caring, loving, and honest guy who represented all that is good about the state of Iowa.
He also added that he lived his life to the fullest every day.
The late basketball player’s jersey number 40 was retired on February 6, 1993, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena by the University of Iowa’s Men’s Basketball Team.
The administration of Iowa Hawkeye started to give the “Chris Street Award” to the player/s at the end of every season for exemplifying the intensity, spirit, and enthusiasm of Chris Street.
Hawkeye’s Guard Jordan Bohannon purposely missed a free throw in a match against the Northwestern Wildcats on February 25, 2018.
That particular free throw would’ve broken Chris’ school record, but he decided to tie it with his 34 Consecutive Made Free Throws record.
When reporters asked him why he intentionally missed the free throw, he stated that the record wasn’t his to have and deserved to stay in Chris’ name.

Big Ten Network premiered a documentary on Chris Street’s short yet phenomenal basketball career on January 18, 2023.
They had posted a documentary trailer three weeks before its release on YouTube with the name “The B1G Story: Chris Street.”
The documentary covers everything from his childhood to how he started his basketball journey.
It also speaks about Chris Street’s death cause and his legacy, which still runs in the Iowa Hawkeye with the “Chris Street Award.”
After a few weeks or months, his documentary will soon be available on Fox Sports.
Although he was gone at the young age of 20, Street will never be forgotten.
