After a standout career at Duke, Hurley was drafted seventh overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 1993 NBA Draft. Despite his shortened NBA career, Hurley remained involved in basketball, transitioning to coaching after retiring.

He began coaching as an assistant at Wagner University and Rhode Island before landing his first head coaching job at the University of Buffalo in 2013.

In 2015, he was hired as the head coach at Arizona State, where he has been coaching ever since.

Bobby Hurley, a former college basketball star and current head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils, was involved in a near-fatal car accident in 1993 that drastically changed the trajectory of his playing career.

On December 12, 1993, Hurley was driving home from a game against the Los Angeles Clippers when a Buick station wagon struck him. He wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time, and the impact of the crash launched him 100 feet from his car.

Hurley suffered two collapsed lungs, a ruptured trachea, broken ribs, a compression fracture in his back, and several injuries to his wrists and legs.

Hurley’s injuries were so severe that his life hung in the balance. However, he survived the accident and underwent a grueling rehabilitation with the Sacramento Kings’ conditioning coach, Al Biancani.

Hurley worked tirelessly to return to basketball but was never the same player again.

Despite playing 68 games in his sophomore season, Hurley’s minutes dwindled each year, and he was eventually traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1998.

He attempted a comeback with the Boston Celtics in 2000 but was waived shortly after the end of the 1998-99 NBA lockout.

Bobby Hurley spent ten years in the horse racing industry before transitioning to coaching. He achieved success as the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls and is currently the head coach of the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Bobby Hurley Family

Mr. Hurley was born on June 28, 1971, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, Bob and Chris Hurley.

Bobby grew up in a sports-loving family, with his father being a successful high school basketball coach and his older brother, Danny, also becoming a basketball coach.

Bobby attended St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, where he played under his father’s coaching.
