Bianca Vanessa Andreescu is a Canadian professional tennis player born in Mississauga, Ontario, on June 16, 2000. 

She is of Romanian descent, and her parents emigrated from Romania to Canada in 1994 when her Father accepted a job there. Andreescu began playing tennis at seven in her parent’s home country of Romania and returned to Canada at nine.

Andreescu succeeded as a junior tennis player, winning the Orange Bowl and two notable doubles titles with compatriot Carson Branstine. She reached a career-best junior ranking of No. 3 globally before transitioning to the WTA Tour level.

In 2019, Andreescu had a breakout year on the WTA Tour. She began the season as a runner-up in her first event, the Auckland Open, before winning the Indian Wells Open, a Premier Mandatory tournament.

While attempting to return the ball, Andreescu injured her ankle and collapsed on the court, screaming in pain. She received medical attention on the court and was taken off in a wheelchair in tears. 

Later, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) confirmed that she had suffered a left ankle injury. She provided an update on her social media account, stating that she had torn two ligaments in her left ankle.

 However, she added that it could have been much worse, and she was optimistic about her return to the court soon. The rehabilitation process had already started, and she promised to continue giving updates.

Andreescu’s injury is the latest in a series of injuries she has suffered throughout her career. In 2021, she retired from the final in Miami due to a right ankle injury against Ash Barty.

The player missed the entire 2020 season due to an injury, and in April 2021, she returned to the circuit after a six-month break.

In the Miami Open tournament, she had looked back to her best with wins over Emma Raducanu, Maria Sakkari, and Sofia Kenin before the fourth-round match.
