The Atiq Ahmad Shooter case has brought attention to the need for stricter measures to ensure the safety and security of citizens, especially those in Police custody.

Former Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmad was shot dead while being escorted by Police. The assassins used highly sophisticated Zigana pistols, banned in India, to shoot Atiq and his brother Ashraf Azeem, who was also killed in the attack.

The shooters, identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny, and Arun Maurya, have been arrested, and they admitted to killing Atiq and Ashraf to establish themselves as criminals.

Atiq Ahmad, a former MP from the Phulpur constituency in Allahabad, was shot dead on April 15, 2023. He was being escorted by Police for a medical examination when three individuals posing as journalists pulled out pistols and shot him.

The incident was captured on camera by media persons following the handcuffed duo of Atiq and Ashraf being taken to the Calvin Hospital. The shooters were identified as Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny, and Arun Maurya.

They all belong to three different districts in Uttar Pradesh. The assailants used highly sophisticated Zigana pistols, which are banned in India. TISAS, a Turkish gun manufacturer, makes Zigana semi-automatic pistols.

When shooters were questioned about their intention of killing Atiq and Ashraf, they admitted that they killed Atiq and Ashraf mainly because they wanted to establish themselves as criminals.

They also said that they had intended to kill Atiq and Ashraf since they learned they were being held in custody and finally had the chance to do it on Saturday.

Who Killed Atiq Ahmad And His Brother Ashraf Azeem?

The two were shot dead in Prayagraj when three individuals opened Fire on them near a famous institution where Atiq and Ashraf were being taken for medical examinations. Atiq and Ashraf collapsed on the ground soon after they were shot.

Disguised as journalists, the shooters approached Atiq and Ashraf as they arrived for a check-up. They were quickly joined by a group of individuals posing as fellow journalists, who closed in on the two brothers.

At the same time, one was roaming with a mike written NCR News on it. Third was assisting both, according to a media report citing Police sources.

The killings of Atiq Ahmad and his brother have triggered strong reactions from political leaders across the country. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said she was “shocked by the brazen anarchy and total collapse of law & order in Uttar Pradesh.”

While Atiq and his brother were in Police custody, they were killed, as per the comment made by Asaduddin Owaisi. The incident was met with slogans of JSR, and Owaisi stated that it showcased Yogi’s inability to maintain law and order.

Those who advocate for encounter killings were also held accountable for the murder. The Uttar Pradesh government has created a three-member judicial panel to look into the murders of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf.

The commission must submit its report to the government within two months, and the state home department has constituted the commission under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952.

In conclusion, The Atiq Ahmad shooter case has raised serious questions about the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh. The fact that Atiq and Ashraf were killed while being escorted by Police for a medical examination has exposed the loopholes.
