Authorities in Colorado have arrested Zachary Kwak of Arvada, Joseph Koenig and Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik, high school seniors.
They were arrested for their alleged involvement in throwing large landscaping rocks at vehicles, which resulted in the death of a driver, Alexa Bartell, aged 20.
On the evening of April 19, six drivers in the greater Denver area reported rocks being thrown at their vehicles, causing minor injuries to two drivers.
Bartell was driving in Jefferson County when a large rock smashed through her front windshield, causing her death.
Her friend, who was on the phone with her then, became concerned when the line was disconnected and eventually found Bartell’s body in a field using phone tracking.
The sheriff’s office utilized mobile device forensics and information provided by the public to make the arrests.

Zachary Kwak, 18 years old high school senior, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for involvement in throwing landscaping rocks along with Joseph Koenig and Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik.
It is believed that one of them threw the rock that caused the death of Alexa Bartell, but it remains unclear which suspect is responsible.
All three individuals are suspected of participating in the rock-throwing spree that lasted for an hour.
On the other hand, With the help of tips from the public and mobile device forensics, the sheriff’s office was able to identify the three suspects, leading to their arrests.
The suspects are expected to appear in court for the first time on Thursday. The investigation was assisted by the Westminster Police, Arvada Police, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office expressed their satisfaction in being able to notify Alexa’s family and the other victims of the arrests.
They also recognized the courage and resilience of crime victims during Crime Victims’ Rights Week, particularly the Bartell family, who serve as their motivation.

Alexa Bartell was a 20-year-old woman who tragically lost her life on April 19, 2023, after a rock was thrown into her windshield while driving in Jefferson County, Colorado.
She was a cherished team member at Commercial Flooring Services, where her mother works, and was well-known for her friendly and outgoing personality and ability to befriend anyone.
Her sudden and unexpected death has shocked her loved ones and the community, prompting an outpouring of support.
Following an investigation into the incident, three suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in an hour-long rock-throwing spree that caused injuries to two other drivers.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Mike Kelley, the family expressed gratitude for the progress in the case.
Although they continue to suffer from an irreplaceable loss, the family was thankful that the suspects were identified and brought to justice for their actions.
Further, Bartell’s employer, Commercial Flooring Services, offered a $15,000 reward in her honor for any information related to the incident. Bartell’s mother is also a CFS team member.
Friends remembered Bartell as a person who brought joy to everyone and was a friend to all. As a makeshift memorial was set up near her death, friends and family mourned the loss of a life cut short.
