Wayne Shorter attended Newark Arts High School and graduated in 1952. He was born in Newark, New Jersey.
His older brother Alan started out playing the alto saxophone before moving to the trumpet in college, and his Father encouraged him to learn the clarinet when he was a small child because he loved music.
During his high school years, Wayne performed in Newark with the Nat Phipps Band. Shorter graduated from New York University in 1956 with a degree in music education and served two years in the American Army.
He temporarily worked with Horace Silver around this time. After being discharged from duty, he joined Maynard Ferguson in playing. Mr. Gone, Shorter’s boyhood stage name, was later used as the title of a Weather Report album.

Shorter met Teruko (Irene) Nakagami in 1961. They ultimately married, and they had a daughter named Miyako.

After meeting in 1966, Shorter and Ana Maria Patricio were married in 1970. Iska, their 14-year-old daughter, died in 1986 due to a grand mal seizure.
Ana Maria and the couple’s niece Dalila died on TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996, while on route to Italy to visit Shorter.
Dalila’s parents were Jon Lucien, a jazz vocalist, and Ana Maria Shorter’s sister. Carolina Dos Santos, a close friend of Ana Maria’s, married Shorter in 1999.
