The discovery of a homicide in the 200 block of S.W. Harrison on Monday led to the arrest of a female suspect, Serena Sanchez, in Topeka.

The victim, identified as Rodney D. Clayton, was found deceased in the 200 block of S.W. Harrison. Topeka authorities are currently investigating the case.

Rodney D. Clayton’s death in Topeka on Monday marked the eighth homicide of the year in the city. A thorough investigation is being done on the murder of Clayton and the alleged killer Serena Sanchez.

Serena Sanchez- Arrested In Connection To A Suspicious Death

The Shawnee County Jail is currently holding Serena Marie Sanchez, aged 26, without bond, in connection with intentional second-degree murder, according to jail records.

She was booked into the jail at 11:45 pm on suspicion of intentional second-degree murder, although formal charges have not yet been filed.

On Monday morning, officers were called to the site where they discovered a deceased male, Topeka Police Captain Jerry Monasmith stated.

According to Topeka Police Captain Jerry Monasmith, the inquiry into the victim’s death, identified as Clayton, resulted in the apprehension of Sanchez.

As of Wednesday morning, the precise cause of Clayton’s death had not been disclosed to the public.

The region in question, situated at the intersection of S.W. 3rd and Harrison’s northeast corner, was cordoned off by law enforcement officials using yellow crime scene tape on Monday.

As per the prison records, Sanchez was held on Tuesday for intentional second-degree murder and outstanding Topeka Municipal Court bench warrants totaling $1,765 in bonds.

Topeka Crime Rate Statistics – 2023

Topeka recorded eight homicides in 2023, and Rodney D. Clayton was the latest victim. The homicides were the result of six incidents, including one triple homicide.

Despite a slight increase in homicides in Topeka this year, the Topeka Police Department and WIBW have reported a reduction in overall crime rates, including a four-year low in shootings.

According to a crime data report released by the Topeka Police Department on Wednesday, 2022 marked a four-year low in the number of shootings and a double-digit decrease in reported property crimes in the city.

Topeka Police reported that crime decreased by 10.4% in 2022, with a notable drop in shootings and property crimes. Additionally, the department made 673 more arrests in 2022 than in the previous year.

There were 17 homicides in Topeka in 2022, with 88% of the cases solved. This number marks an increase of three from the 14 homicides reported in 2021.

The number of homicides recorded in 2021 in Topeka didn’t include one officer-involved shooting during a conflict between an armed person and the Police, as stated in the year-end crime data report.
