On July 13, 2015, the body of Sandra Annette Bland, an African American woman aged 28, was discovered hanging in her jail cell in Waller County, Texas.
People started several Sandra Bland Petition Campaigns after her death was ruled a suicide. Her family and friends were devasted for not getting justice.
During the legal proceedings of Sandra Bland’s death case, several investigations ultimately led to renaming Texas Senate Bill to Sandra Bland Act as a tribute to her.
For context, on July 10, a traffic stop by State Trooper Brian Encinia for a minor violation led to an arrest and later death of Sandra Bland in her jail cell three days after her arrest.

Sandra Bland Petition For Justice
As mentioned above, several petition campaigns got initiated as they protested for justice, demanding the officer who arrested Sandra Bland, Brian Encinia, be fired from the Police Department.
Her family, friends, and people from Texas started online campaigns through Change.org, Color of Change, MoveOn, and OrganizeFor.
Sandra Bland Petition Campaign was created once again after almost five years on the White House’s Official Website on July 30, 2020, when Former President Donald Trump was still in action.
More than 102,000 people signed the petition to reopen Sandra Bland’s case within a few days; however, the attorney’s never reopened Bland’s case.
New video footage came to light in 2020 taken by Sandra Bland, and her family wanted to reopen her case because they believed that the video was hidden from the grand jury.

Sandra Bland Mugshot And Arrest Video Released After Her Death
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) released several hours of video on July 28, showing different moments of Bland’s time in jail, including her arrival, mug shot, and phone calls.
The authorities declared that the video was released to quash rumors and conspiracy theories, such as that Bland was already dead when she reached the jail and that her mug shot was taken after her death.
Some of the significant events that were shown in the arrest video, which was released after her death, are as follows:
- Encinia stops Bland for a minor traffic violation.
- He returns to her car and demands she put out her cigarette.
- Bland refuses to leave the car, resulting in Encinia drawing his Taser.
- Bland eventually exits the vehicle and is ordered to surrender her cell phone.
- The two move to the vehicle’s passenger side and continue to argue.
- Bland is heard crying and screaming during the altercation.

Seven video footages of Sandra Bland’s arrest, magistration, call assignment, and conversation with jail personnel were publicly displayed via a YouTube Channel titled Waller County in 2016. The videos are still available there.
During a news conference, Judge Trey Duhon of Waller County reported that death threats against county officials have been made due to the rumors and publicizing of the video footage.
A Texas TV station aired a 39-second video of part of the confrontation recorded by Bland, which had been in possession of state investigators and discovered in 2019.
The Texas Department of Public Safety disputed the claims made by the family of Bland and their lawyer in a civil lawsuit that the state did not provide evidence.
