Born in September 1952 in New York City, Pitino played as a Point Guard and was the team captain of the St. Dominic High School basketball team.

Richard studied at St. Sebastian’s School and later completed a Bachelor of Arts in History from Providence College. During his time in college, he served as the manager of the Friars men’s basketball team.
