Yodit Hizekiel, the daughter of Rahel Mekuria, has announced the passing of her mother, who was a dedicated educator and media pioneer in Ethiopia.

Yodit was from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and first studied at Mrs. Ford’s school.

She later attended Sanford English School and finally finished her secondary education at Kedamawi Hailesellasie School.

Yodit Hizekiel, daughter of the late Rahel Mekuria, has been a dedicated educational leader serving international and US schools for nearly twenty years. 

Her daughter is currently the deputy principal at the elementary division of the International Community School of Addis Ababa, a Model PLC at Work school.

 

Hizekiel has served as a learning coach, team leader, and classroom teacher throughout her career.

She focuses on providing educators with the skills to ensure student success through the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process.

Beyond her administrative position, Mekuria’s daughter has been a contributing author, a workshop leader, and an active member of Toastmasters International, where she has held various leadership roles.

Furthermore, Mrs Hizekiel holds a certificate in school management and leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and has extensive training in the IB Primary Years Programme and student-centered coaching. 

She also earned her bachelor’s degree from Southwestern Assemblies of God University and her master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. 

She attends Wilkes University, working toward her doctorate in educational leadership to carry on a family tradition of excellence in education.

Rachel Mekuria was a loving mother and news of her passing away on 1st February 2025 was shared by her daughter Yodit Hizekiel. 

Her daughter penned a touching tribute, describing her as “the most beautiful person in the world” and called her ” a gentle soul” deeply in love with God. 

 

Moreover, she says she is heartbroken, however, her mom passed on just the way she wanted to go. 

She was the most beautiful person in the entire world! And she was my mom! She went to sleep and went off to be with the God she loved and worshiped her whole life today. If there was ever a saint, she was one. If I am one tenth the person she was I would be happy. She was my first Bible teacher, my protector, my hero, my gentle of all gentle souls. I am so heartbroken, but she went how she wanted so Iā€™m at peace. I love you forever mamiye
