His dad, Lawrence Raymond “Jerry” Gervais, was a mix of French Canadian and Iroquois ancestry.

Ricky grew up in a place called Whitley in Reading. He had a sister named Marsha and two brothers, Larry and Robert.

Similarly, he went to schools called Whitley Park Infants and Junior Schools. Later, he went to Ashmead Comprehensive School.

After taking a year off, he worked as a gardener at the University of Reading and then went to University College London (UCL) in 1980.
