Even though there were no lifeguards on duty, Batista raced into the sea, motivated by his love for his daughter and his impulse to defend others.

Unfortunately, the ocean might prove unstoppable, and Batista succumbed to the difficult conditions, drowning in his brave attempt to save his daughter.

The fact that there were no lifeguards on duty at the time of the occurrence has prompted concerns about beach safety and the need for attention in such areas. 

“It’s a tragedy when someone attempts to save a family member, and then they don’t make it out,” Bob Zielinski, who watched the incident at the beach, said.

After the incident, the town of Avon-by-the-Sea declared that full-time lifeguards would be deployed the following week. This approach tries to prevent such tragedies and protect beachgoers’ safety.

The FDNY issued the following statement in response to the incident:

“We are devastated to learn of the loss of Firefighter Mark Batista, who died while swimming at the Jersey Shore on Friday. Firefighter Batista was a committed public servant who served in the FDNY for fifteen years as an EMT and a fireman. We join his family in grieving his untimely death.”
