Officers gather at Temple University Hospital after the Saturday night shooting death of Temple University Police Officer Christopher Fitzgerald in the 1700 block of West Montgomery Avenue in North Philadelphia.
Temple officials say the officer was killed while pursuing a suspect in a nearby convenience store robbery.
At 7:27 pm, he was confirmed dead at Temple University Hospital, marking the school’s first officer killed in the line of duty.
Fitzgerald was shot after allegedly “attempting to intervene in a carjacking,” according to Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.

According to the temple, he was married and blessed with four children. Fitzgerald had been with Temple since October 20, 2021.

Miles Pfeffer, 18, was apprehended and sent back to Philadelphia by US Marshals and local authorities around 7 am. Sunday at his mother’s residence in Buckingham Township, Bucks County.
He is charged with murder, as well as the murder of a law enforcement officer, according to officials.
According to the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Pfeffer was involved in an armed carjacking after killing Fitzgerald.
The officer was not shot while attempting to stop a carjacking, as Police initially said Saturday night.
The District Attorney’s Office did not specify what prompted Pfeffer’s alleged shooting of Fitzgerald. According to a Police affidavit, Pfeffer shot Fitzgerald and then slumped to the ground.

Officer Fitzgerald’s family is not surprised that he did not flee danger but instead went in to aid.
Temple University President Jason Wingard issued a statement late Saturday night, reflecting on the city’s and beyond’s continuous gun violence.
A monument of images, candles, and flowers has sprouted around the site of Fitzgerald’s murder, near 17th Street and Montgomery Avenue.
In addition, the Temple University Police Association established a GoFundMe Campaign to assist Fitzgerald’s family. The target amount is $100,000.
