Ali Bongo Ondimba, also called Ali Bongo, is a politician from Gabon. He is part of the Gabonese Democratic Party.

Bongo is the son of Omar Bongo, who governed Gabon from 1967 until his passing in 2009. Further, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs during his father’s leadership from 1989 to 1991.

Subsequently, Ali represented Bongoville as a Deputy in the National Assembly from 1991-1999 & further assumed the role of Minister of Defense from 1999 to 2009.

Following his father’s demise, he secured victory in the 2009 Gabonese presidential election.

In the elections of 2016, he secured reelection; however, these elections were tainted by a multitude of irregularities, arrests, breaches of human rights, and subsequent protests and outbreaks of violence.

Bongo received his education at a private school in Neuilly, France, and later pursued legal studies at the Sorbonne.

In 2018, Bongo was granted an honorary doctorate in law from Wuhan University in China.

Is Ali Bongo Malade (Sick) In 2023?

There have been talks and guesses about Ali Bongo Ondimba’s health for many years.

In 2023, he appears to be in good health and actively involved in his professional duties.

Recently, Ali Bongo secured a third term in the presidential election, receiving 64.27% of the vote, as announced by the Gabonese election center on Wednesday.

This victory followed a general election that faced delays and was criticized by the opposition for dishonesty.

The head of the elections, Michel Stephane Bonda, declared the results in the early hours, stating that Bongo’s main rival, Albert Ondo Ossa, came in second with 30.77% of the votes.

Bongo’s team dismissed Ondo Ossa’s claims of voting irregularities.

On October 24, 2018, Bongo was hospitalized in Riyadh for an undisclosed illness.

Then, on November 29, 2018, he was moved to a military hospital in Rabat to keep getting better. On December 9, 2018, Gabon’s Vice President Moussavou said Bongo had a stroke in Riyadh.

He left the hospital in Rabat and is getting better at a private home there. Nobody saw Bongo publicly from October 24, 2018, to January 1, 2019.

This made many people wonder if he had died or gotten sick. But on January 1, 2019, Bongo spoke in a video on social media to show he was okay and stop the rumors about him dying.

Still, some people who don’t support Bongo said the video wasn’t real, and someone else was pretending to be him. This made things confusing.

In August 2019, Bongo appeared publicly for the first time since he got sick. He has been seen in public using a wheelchair a few times since he got sick.

A Look At Ali Bongo Career

Ali Bongo’s political journey commenced during the 1980s, as he took on roles as his father’s representative and a government minister.

His first significant appointment came in 1989 when he became the foreign minister, holding the position until 1991.

He then transitioned into being a member of the National Assembly from 1991 to 1999 and served as the defense minister from 1999 to 2009.

Following his father’s passing in 2009, Bongo contested and won a controversial presidential election.

He has since been re-elected two more times, in 2016 and 2023. His time as president has been marked by allegations of corruption and human rights violations.

Parallel to his political commitments, Bongo has also achieved success in music. He released a funk album in 1986 and has continued his musical pursuits throughout his presidency.
