The Alesha MacPhail case refers to the abduction, rape, and murder of a six-year-old girl named Alesha MacPhail on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, in July 2018.
She was reported missing from her grandparents’ residence in the early hours of July 2, 2018, and her body was discovered later in a wooded area on the island.
After a Police investigation, a 16-year-old boy, Aaron Thomas Campbell, was taken into custody and charged with Alesha’s abduction, rape, and murder.
Despite denying the charges, he was found guilty after a nine-day trial at the High Court in Glasgow in February 2019 and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 27 years.
Forensic scientists presented evidence during the trial, including DNA matching the boy’s profile on Alesha’s body and clothes, as well as a footprint found on the bathroom floor of the House where Alesha had been staying that matched a pair of trainers the boy had been seen wearing on CCTV footage.
The case significantly impacted the local community and received national media coverage in the UK.
Alesha’s family, including her mother and grandparents, expressed their sorrow and loss following the trial, and initiatives were implemented to improve safety measures on the island after the tragic incident.
Alesha Macphail Autopsy Report
Alesha Macphail’s autopsy report concluded that she received 117 injuries, some of which were inflicted while she was alive and others that may have been caused by vegetation.
Injuries to her face and neck suggested that she had been held, while injuries to her nose and mouth indicated that she had been smothered.
Her genitalia was found to have suffered “catastrophic” injuries. Further, the pathologist who conducted the examination concluded that her death was caused by “significant forceful pressure to her neck and face.”
As a result of the autopsy findings, Police Scotland launched a murder investigation.
Chief Superintendent Hazel Hendren, the local Police commander, announced that “every available resource from across Police Scotland” would be dedicated to the investigation.

Aaron Thomas Campbell was the killer of six-year-old Alesha MacPhail.

Campbell’s childhood was marked by physical and emotional abuse, and he frequently quarreled with his mother, who struggled with alcoholism.
He was diagnosed with ADHD and had a history of depression and self-harm.
Campbell attended Rothesay Academy, where he was well-liked by his peers and enjoyed attending parties and consuming alcohol.
At 15, Campbell contemplated committing extreme acts such as rape. He also sent a Facebook message in 2017, hinting that he might kill someone for the experience.
