“He played Cornelius Hackl to my Dolly in ‘Hello Dolly’ and I looked forward to working with him every single night. He was fantastic,” she wrote. “I can’t believe he’s gone. What a loss.”

His former co-star Ben Platt wrote

“Gavin was my first role model, idol and hero,” “He showed me around backstage after I saw my first Broadway show. I couldn’t believe someone that supernaturally talented could also be every single person’s favorite human being. I wanted to sing just like him and be just like him.”

Though primarily known as a stage actor, he appeared on TV several times, most notably in family movies, including “Eloise at the Plaza” and its holiday-themes sequel, “Eloise at Christmastime.”

Behind the scenes, he was known as a staunch LGBTQ+ rights advocate.

Gavin Creel, born on April 18, 1976, in Findlay, Ohio, was raised in a religious environment that he found highly alienating and was drawn to theater to escape it. 

He started his professional career in regional theater in 1997. His earliest credits are as part of the resident cast of Pittsburgh CLO, a repertory theater, for their 1997 and 1998 season. 

After his graduation, Gavin played Nick Piazza in the opening cast of the 1998 National Tour of Fame.

He made his Broadway debut in 2002 in the original production Thoroughly Modern Millie, originating the role of Jimmy Smith opposite Sutton Foster’s Millie Dillmount.

From 2012 to 2015, he starred in a series of The Book of Mormon productions. He starred as Elder Price in the show’s First National Tour 2012.

In 2021, he appeared in 2 episodes of American Horror Stories opposite Matt Bomer and Sierra McCormick on FX on Hulu. 

Creel performed a song from his self-written musical for the first time at Elsie Fest in 2019, where he debuted the song “The Only One.”
