Ramos had advertised for a roommate to share her Orange County home to save on living costs. The respondent was Kwang Chol ‘KC’ Joy, who described himself as a “Korean, single, professional male” from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Over time, the relationship between Ramos and Joy became strained. Joy seemed infatuated with Ramos, even to the point of undergoing cosmetic surgery to make himself more appealing to her.

This obsession, however, was unreciprocated; Ramos was unimpressed with Joy’s advances, causing tension in their shared home. Additionally, disputes arose over Joy’s failure to contribute to rent, which intensified their animosity.

On the day of her disappearance, Ramos was seen on surveillance camera dropping off a rent check at her property manager’s office. Earlier that day, she had attempted to evict Joy due to his rent arrears.

Ramos’s disappearance following this event led to speculation about Joy’s involvement, causing authorities to delve deeper into his activities.

The case of Ramos’s murder presents a chilling account of obsession, deception, and tragedy. Authorities suspected her roommate, KC Joy, due to the couple’s strained relationship and his aberrant behavior following Ramos’s disappearance.

They began tracking Joy’s movements and investigating his online activities. It was found that Joy frequented the Orange County Public Library, where he conducted disturbing online searches about the decomposition of a human body.

This activity escalated suspicions about his involvement in Ramos’s disappearance. Joy’s internet browsing history also revealed his keen interest in a Facebook post about an awareness walk organized by Ramos’s family in her honor.

He used a satellite map to zoom in on the walk’s location near Santiago Canyon and Jackson Ranch roads.

Further investigations led police officers to this very location, where they made a macabre discovery: Ramos’s body was buried in a shallow grave. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the exact cause of death couldn’t be determined.

Joy was arrested and tried for the murder of Maribel Ramos. Despite his attempts to maintain his innocence, including claims of being Ramos’s best friend and only family member, he was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison.

Throughout his trial and even after his conviction, Joy continually proclaimed his innocence.

He wrote dozens of letters to the judge presiding over his case, and local media outlets and even announced plans to pen a book titled “Suspect, Guilty Until Proven Innocent.”

Regardless of his repeated declarations of innocence, KC Joy remains a convict in the murder of Maribel Ramos. He continues to serve his sentence at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, California.

As of now, he is 63 years old and eligible for parole in the spring. Throughout the years, this case has remained a sobering reminder of the potential dangers hidden in everyday encounters.
