Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan leader resident in Canada, was assassinated in the Punjabi-dominated city of Surrey in British Columbia province.
He was the president of Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. Najjar was a member of the Sikhs for Justice organization. He was instrumental in organizing the Khalistan referendum in Brampton.

Last year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) declared a Rs. 10 lakh reward for him in 2022.
He was a member of the organization Sikhs for Justice and was instrumental in arranging the Khalistan referendum in Brampton.
Nijjar’s role in the Sikh separatist movement had alarmed Indian authorities, who had previously accused him of plotting terrorist strikes.
The Indian National Investigation Agency (NIA) has requested Canadian authorities to take action against Nijjar for his suspected involvement in terrorist operations in Punjab.
Nijjar was also the commander of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) [2]. This terrorist-designated extremist organization sought to establish an independent Sikh state, Khalistan, in India’s Punjab area.
Nijjar’s membership with the KTF led to the Indian government designating him as a wanted Khalistani terrorist. As he was suspected of plotting to kill a Hindu priest in Punjab, the NIA announced a reward for his capture.
