Eight-year-old Anadith Tanay Reyes Álvarez, born in Panama to Honduran parents, arrived in the United States with her parents and two siblings.
As per the statement by Customs and Border Protection, Anadith Tanay Reyes Alvarez passed away on Wednesday after experiencing a “medical emergency” while in custody with her family in Harlingen, Texas.
In an emotionally charged interview, Mabel Álvarez and Rossel Reyes, the parents of Anadith, expressed their desire for “justice” for their daughter, alleging that border patrol did not treat the situation with the seriousness it deserved until it was too late.
The parents claimed they provided authorities with documents detailing their daughter’s medical condition in immigration custody.
Alvarez tearfully recounted how she pleaded with authorities to call an ambulance but was told that the girl’s condition did not warrant such action.
Further, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced that the Office of Professional Responsibility will conduct an investigation, as is standard procedure following a death.
The investigation aims to seek clarity and accountability surrounding the tragic incident.
Mabel Alvarez Speaks Out: Agents Ignored Pleas to Hospitalize Medically Fragile Daughter
On Friday, the mother of an 8-year-old girl who tragically died in Border Patrol custody spoke out, revealing that agents repeatedly disregarded her pleas to have her medically fragile daughter hospitalized.
The girl, who had a history of heart problems and sickle cell anemia, experienced intense pain in her bones, struggled to breathe, and could not walk.
Alvarez Benedicks, 35, along with her husband and their three children aged 14, 12, and 8, crossed the border into Brownsville, Texas, on May 9, seeking a better life. However, their journey took a devastating turn.
After an initial diagnosis of influenza for 8-year-old Anadith, the family was transferred to the Harlingen station on May 14.
According to Alvarez Benedicks, on the first day at the Harlingen station, Anadith woke up with a fever and complained of a headache.
The conditions in the station were far from ideal, as described by her mother, with a dusty environment and urine smell.
When Alvarez reported her daughter’s bone pain to an agent, the response she received was disheartening. The agent dismissively attributed the pain to growing up, advising her to give her daughter water.
In an emotionally charged phone interview, Mabel Alvarez, the grieving mother, shared that Border Patrol agents dismissed her concerns by stating that her daughter’s diagnosis of influenza did not warrant hospital care.
Distraught and desperate, she asserted that her daughter’s life was taken from her due to the agents’ negligence.
In extreme distress, the young girl pleaded and cried for help, but her cries went unanswered. The agents failed to take any action to alleviate her suffering.
The heartbroken mother firmly believes that her daughter perished because she was deprived of the ability to breathe for nearly a day and a half.
