The passing of renowned local composer Jocelyn Morlock at 53 has left the Canadian arts community and Vancouver’s music scene in shock and sorrow.

Jocelyn Morlock is survived by her partner, John Korsrud, a composer, trumpeter, and Leader of the Hard Rubber Orchestra.

Eighteen hours before this writing, Jocelyn Morlock’s Partner, John Korsrud, shared a short video of her making a “sad-happy face” upon his request.

John stated that Jocelyn was a goofy and funny person capable of doing millions of expressions. He also mentioned that it was his favorite request to let him do that particular video.

Many students, relatives, and close friends shared tribute and condolences to Jocelyn and John’s family in his post, which was highly emotional and heartwarming.

Although their relationship timeline is a bit vague because of their low-profile lifestyle, it is undeniable that the couple shared an extraordinary bond that was way above any marital status.

Born in 1963, John Korsrud graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1990. He later studied composition from 1995 to 1997 at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam.

Korsrud has received commissions from the American Composers Orchestra, CBC Radio Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and several Dutch ensembles.

With The American Composers Orchestra, Korsrud played his trumpet concerto, Come to the Dark Side, at Carnegie Hall in 2010, 

Since 1990, Korsrud has led the Hard Rubber Orchestra, an acclaimed 18-piece new music jazz ensemble, with international performances and three recorded albums, including the Alcan Arts Award winner in 2005.

In addition to his orchestra, Korsrud is the Leader of two other ensembles: the Orquestra Goma Dura, a 20-piece Salsa/Latin-Jazz-Orchestra, and The Drum & Light Orchestra, a 14-piece drum and bass ensemble.

Korsrud has undertaken several ambitious multimedia projects, including The Elvis Cantatas (1994, 1996), The Ice Age: The World’s First New Music Ice Show (2000, 2010), Enter/Exit (2005), and The Drum & Light Festival (2008–10).

His accomplishments include producing Cantata for the King, winning the Leo and Golden Sheaf Awards for Heroines’ music, and winning a Leo Award for Prisoners of Age’s film music, with a Gemini Award nomination.

Recognitions for his contributions to music include the “Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award” from the Canada Council in 2015 and the City of Vancouver Mayor’s Award for Music in 2012, among others.

Currently, Korsrud is a composition instructor at Capilano University and Vancouver Community College and resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Remembering Jocelyn Morlock’s Legacy

Canadian Music Composer and Teacher Jocelyn Morlock, born on December 14, 1969, was a passionate music educator who taught music composition at UBC for several years.

Her piece titled “My Name is Amanda Todd,” commissioned and debuted by the National Arts Centre Orchestra, was honored with the prestigious Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year in 2018.

In addition to her Juno Award-winning composition, Joclyne has also held notable positions as Composer-in-Residence for Music on Main from 2012 to 2014 and for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra from 2014 to 2019.

Her impressive career includes serving as Composer-in-Residence for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (2014-2019) and Vancouver’s Music on Main (2012-2014). Additionally, she co-hosted the ISCM World New Music Days in 2017.

Morlock composed for music contests, including the 2008 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition and 2005 Montreal International Music Competition, and won the 2018 SOCAN Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award.

She also won the 2004 Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region Emerging Composers competition and placed in the Top 10 at the International Rostrum of Composers in 2002.
