She was born in Port Daniel, Quebec, on February 14, 1921. Her family ran a business that canned and canned seafood.
After graduating high school, McCallion studied business secretarial in Montreal and Quebec City.
She started out working at Louis Rolland Paper. Later, she was sent to Toronto after being hired by the Canadian Kellogg Company.
Before being elected mayor of Streetsville in 1970, she served on the planning board in that city.
Three years later, the town merged with the villages of Port Credit and Mississauga to establish the City of Mississauga. McCallion was a successful council candidate.

At an Anglican Church congregation in Toronto, she first met Sam McCallion (1923-1997), the man she would marry on September 29, 1951.
Furthermore, The couple received a plot of property close to the Ontario community of Streetsville as a wedding gift from McCallion’s in-laws, and they relocated there in December 1951.
Before entering politics, she and her husband started The Streetsville Booster in 1964.

Sadly, Her husband passed away from Alzheimer’s illness in 1997.

Hazel McCallion Career
She quit the corporate world in 1967 to pursue a career in politics. She served as Streetsville’s mayor from 1970 until 1973.
Moreover, The City of Mississauga was created in 1974 with the merger of Streetsville, Port Credit, and the town of Mississauga.
In 1978, McCallion won a seat as Mississauga’s third mayor.
Due to her persistence and drive to bring about change in her city, McCallion earned the moniker “Hurricane Hazel” after winning 12 consecutive municipal elections.
She increased Mississauga’s population while serving as mayor while keeping the city debt-free.
McCallion published Hurricane Hazel – A Life with Purpose, her autobiography, in 2014.
She has held positions as Special Advisor to the University of Toronto Mississauga and the first Chancellor of Sheridan College since leaving office at the end of her term in 2014.
In recognition of McCallion’s birthday, February 14 was named Hazel McCallion Day throughout Ontario.
On February 14, 2023, she would turn 102. She has earned the respect of many people for her efforts. Everyone was shocked to learn that she had passed away on Sunday.
