The BBC announced his death on Monday but did not specify where, when, or why. The prime minister and Conservative Leader, Rishi Sunak, hailed Mr. Lawson as “a transformational chancellor and an inspiration to myself and many others” in a statement.

His fiscal leadership of the economy helped transform a budget deficit into a surplus, decreased unemployment in half, and slowed inflation. 

Nevertheless, the so-called Lawson Boom was followed by worse times, with surging inflation and exorbitant interest rates that climbed to 15% from 7% in 16 months.

Mr. Lawson also managed the so-called “Big Bang,” which occurred in 1986 and resulted in a boom of unfettered computerized trading on the London Stock Exchange, which Mr. Lawson subsequently said contributed to the 2008 global catastrophe.
